History is replete with opposing forces charting a way forward

- Dear Editor, Sincerely, Sean Ori

In his column “Putting an attempted electoral coup behind” (SN, 9th July 2021) A. A. Fenty, as do many other Guyanese, needs convincing that the PPP and PNC can work together when he says “And you-all want to tell/convince me that the big two can sit, over mauby and buns, to discuss a peaceful constructive way forward? A so-called “installed” government and a seemingly insane opposition? Those of you who believe in prayer, please do lots of it for our country.”

History is replete with examples of two “warring” parties sitting down and charting a way forward.

To understand what needs to happen is to understand the current mindset of the big two. The PPP believes that it has numerical superiority at the ballot box every time. Which is not the case as the May 2015 elections demonstrated. The PNC believes that it somehow has a status quo with the PPP. Both believe that they will do great things for Guyanese yet both have failed to live up to the majority of Guyanese expectations. They both take the electorate for granted and do whatever the heck they want once in Government. They are both under developed in that they don’t want to speak to each other. What exactly does that prove? That they are being ignorant? How can we Guyanese get them to work together?

By pressuring them into understanding, and accepting, that they are both stakeholders. By helping them to understand that they are not winning elections based on their own merits but on the “other side” weaknesses. And, yes, by prayer. What we are dealing with are egotistical people with severely bruised egos. Ponder this A. A. Fenty: If the Guyana Constitution is flawed then no matter how good our intentions are we will get flawed results as they are living by the Guyana Constitution.
