Driver in Railway Embankment accident charged with causing death

Sangodele Mentore, the driver involved in the accident which claimed the life of Dhaniram Harilall, three weeks after he was struck down on the Railway Embankment at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday charged with causing his death.

Mentore appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where the charge was read to him.

He was not required to plead to the charge and was placed on $400,000 bail for the offence, with the conditions that he lodge his passport and report to the Turkeyen Police Station on the 15th of every month.

The matter will be called again on October 7, 2021.

A post-mortem examinatio­n had revealed that Harilall died as a result of complicati­ons from injuries suffered as a result of the accident.

According to the police, Harilall was struck down by motorcar, PZZ 1276, while crossing the Liliendaal Railway Embankment around 2 am on August 6. Harilall never regained consciousn­ess after the accident.

He was admitted to the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital and remained there until he passed away at approximat­ely 9.30 am last Thursday.

The police had reported that Harilall was walking along the southern side of the Railway Embankment when he was struck by the vehicle. As a result, he fell on the surface of the road and suffered injuries about his body.

He was picked up by emergency medical technician­s and taken to the hospital.

The driver fled the scene

after the accident. However, after a report was made to the police, they visited the scene and discovered the vehicle’s registrati­on plate along the roadway.
