Suspects in murder of pastry vendor placed on bail

The two suspects who were arrested in relation to the murder of pastry vendor, Shawn Albert during an anti-crime operation in Region Two last week have been released on station bail.

This was confirmed by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum who said that the suspects are required to report to the police as the investigat­ion continues.

Albert was shot around 18:43hrs on August 30 at Onderneemi­ng Sandpit, Region Two. The father of one hailed from Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara. He was a driver/salesman attached to Lin’s Bakery located on South Road, Georgetown.

The police in a statement had previously said that the suspects were apprehende­d based on informatio­n provided by an informant.

According to the statement, the informant contacted two subordinat­e officers at the Anna Regina Police Station and related to them that he had informatio­n on the location of the suspects.

On the basis of this informatio­n, the police had said that Police Commander of Region Two instructed that an operation be launched in order to apprehend the two suspects.

Police ranks visited the location at about 2 am last Wednesday and the two men were arrested.

One of the suspects is known to the police. He was previously charged with robbery. The men were questioned and they denied being involved in the robbery. They also provided separate accounts of their location at the time of Albert’s death.

Reports are that Albert was selling pastries along with salesman Decklon Lee in the village when they were attacked by two masked men.

As soon as they entered their mini bus GWW 1783, the masked men who were armed with a gun, stopped them and demanded cash. It is reported that Albert put up a fight with the armed bandits.

The bandits then opened fire as the now-deceased was attempting drive away, causing him to lose control and crash into a nearby fence. The men made good their escape with $70,000.

Lee was not injured during the robbery.

Residents upon hearing the noise immediatel­y rushed to the scene where they found Albert lying helpless.

The police were immediatel­y summoned. Albert was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
