Onderneeming/Red Lock to get police outpost

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill has told residents of Onderneeming that their community will soon be getting a police outpost.

His announcement came after residents of Onderneeming complained that there has been an increase in crimes in their communities. Edghill said during his interactions with residents that the issue of crime was a serious one and it was decided that the Government will be presenting vehicles to help in crime-fighting. He said government will establish an outpost in the Onderneeming and Red Lock area; the outpost will monitor all activities occurring in the backlands of the Essequibo Coast. There will also be an increased presence of police in the backlands in the upcoming months.

After hearing this announcement residents clapped in appreciation and said that it is a request they made for years.

“Over 2,000 persons live in this community and after the meeting we requested for a police outpost, we are happy that this will be done to curb the high crime situation in the Onderneeming area, the area is peaceful but lots of illegal activities are ongoing,” a resident said. One resident said that his house was broken into and to date the suspect is still at large. Another resident said that his water was poisoned and although he knew who it was, the suspect is still at large. There have also been several murders and home invasions in the past months in the community. Residents also alleged that behind Onderneeming there are large acres of ongoing marijuana cultivation. In the past the police had managed to burn hundreds of acres in that area.
