Anthony warns of increasing COVID cases

The Minister of Health yesterday stated that the trend of increasing COVID-19 cases is expected to continue and he urged persons to adhere to the safety measures and to get vaccinated.

Dr. Frank Anthony made these remarks during his daily COVID-19 update, where he noted that if persons start to take the various precautions, there will be a decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases being recorded.

“So we are going to see this trend of increase in cases — we will see that for the next couple of weeks I would imagine — and again if people start taking more precautions, I think we will see a decrease in the numbers,” he said.

He noted that the precautionary measures are the standard things that local and international health authorities have been encouraging persons to adhere to, including mask wearing, physical and social distancing and getting vaccinated to ensure better protection against the virus.

Anthony reported that there are 131 persons hospitalised across the country with COVID-19. He stated that 83 persons were at the Ocean View hospital, including 30 in the Intensive Care Unit. He said others are hospitalised at the Port Kaituma, Suddie and West Demerara hospitals.

He made specific mention of 10 persons at the Mahaicony Hospital,10 at the Wismar Hospital, one person at the Skeldon Hospital, two persons at the Bartica Hospital and one at the Mahdia Hospital.

He further noted that those hospitalised include maternal COVID-19 cases, five of whom are at the Ocean View facility, and 10 others at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Dr. Anthony also urged persons to get inoculated including women who are pregnant so as to protect themselves from battling severe symptoms if they contract the virus.
