Corentyne man in custody over brother’s death admits to fight

-

A police source yesterday confirmed to Stabroek News that the Corentyne man who was arrested for the alleged murder of his brother, Lakeram Dhurup, has since admitted that the two were involved in a fight moments prior to the now-deceased man falling face-down on a concrete surface.

Dhurup, also known as `Videsh’, 29, of Lot 95, Number 72 Village, Corentyne was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital on Sunday evening where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Guyana Police Force had said that a male, 30, who resides in the same yard as Dhurup is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

An autopsy carried out yesterday gave Dhurup’s cause of death as shock with cerebral and cerebellar haemorrhage and a ruptured aneurysm.

The source yesterday told Stabroek News, that the suspect admitted that the two had a fight and after Dhurup fell to the ground the suspect said that he tried to revive him immediately.

A report from the police on Monday stated that around 11 pm on Sunday, the suspect and Dhurup were involved in a heated argument over the deceased’s wife. “After the argument both men went into the yard where the deceased allegedly continued to curse and abuse the suspect before choking the suspect, which caused him to get angry picking up a wooden bat and dealing the deceased three lashes to his right hand, forehead and back”, the report added.

After the lashes, the deceased then reportedly fell on a concrete surface where he hit his face and forehead and became unconscious.

The police’s report noted, that the suspect then picked up Dhurup and took him into the house where he made attempts to revive him with Limacol and water.

After not regaining consciousness, the man was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
