Philo, you have been an outstanding stalwart

- Dear Editor, Yours faithfully, Hamilton Green

Only late yesterday afternoon, I got around to catch up with the news.

I wish to thank former President Donald Ramotar for reminding us of the grandeur, goodness and graciousness of Mrs. Philomena Sahoye-Shury, as she celebrates her 90th birthday.

To Philo, I say all the best - You have been an outstanding stalwart in the political arena and it is fitting that all Guyanese honour you and show affection and give the respect you deserve.

I remember Philo as the elder child of the Viera family of Agricola. Her mother, Mrs. Winifred Viera was a strong supporter of the PNC from the late 50s and I relied on her for guidance and support.

When I contested the Houston Constituency in the 1961 General Elections, in every family, in every community and in every State rebels emerged.

In the political arena, Philo was considered a rebel, but she was a sweet and solid rebel and because of this, those of us who did not share her political loyalty, maintained, as I did, a cordial and respectful relationship with her.

By every measure, Philomena SahoyeShury remains an enduring Patriot, and we must never forget that fact, and I gladly state this with confidence. She was a lady committed to Guyana and the welfare of our people and I say Happy Birthday.

As an aside, we must thank Donald for bringing her birthday to our attention.

As is the case of some other political leaders, opposed to my beliefs and loyalty, I regard him as a friend with whom I can have cordial, courteous and constructive conversations.

The younger generation may not have had the opportunity to listen to her eloquence and noted the fact that she is always elegantly attired and well groomed, qualities which the political brigade on both sides of our political divide can do well to emulate.

Once more Happy Birthday Philo and God Bless.
