Pooran unconcerned with current form
West Indies vice-captain, Nicholas Pooran says he is not concerned by his current form while reckoning that he is not in a lean patch for runs.
Pooran, 26, was addressing the media via Zoom yesterday where he was quizzed on his recent run with the bat.
“No, I’m not concerned,” he said. “To me my cricket has been based on my confidence and my intent. To be honest, I left the first half of the [Indian Premier League] season, scoring 20 runs in five (or) six innings and I came and did decently in the last three series for the West Indies and CPL [Caribbean Premier League] so no, again it’s about my process, continue to believe in the process, have faith in the process and simple as that, my confidence is very high and I have no doubt in my mind I can go out and execute my game plan and do good for the team,” he stated.
Statistics show leading up to the second leg of the IPL, the left hander scored 71 runs in four innings against South Africa, 96 runs in four innings against Australia, 75 runs in two innings against Pakistan and 263 runs in 10 innings during the CPL. In the IPL, the wicketkeeper managed 57 runs in five innings.
Pooran opined, “I wouldn’t say it is a lean patch for me because I came into the second leg of the IPL batting really well for West Indies and Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL so to me it’s not form, if you really think about it, I haven’t faced that much balls in all honesty so it’s just for me to give myself that chance.
“I just felt like the IPL is gone, it’s done for me., I just felt like I have to refocus and go again. I know personally I have let myself down by not sticking to the process long enough, I felt like I rushed the results a lot and I paid the price for it and you could see that in my scores so it’s just for me to refocus now, hit the nets, work hard and plan again, simple as that,” he added.
Pooran pointed out that there are two different environments when it comes to his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings and playing for West Indies in a World Cup. While he noted he is not one to set goals, he reiterated
his commitment to doing what the team requires.
“I don’t believe in setting targets in all honesty, I just do what’s required of me, what the team requires of me, simple as that. My goal is to try and focus and goal
is to try and win games for West Indies, if it’s batting two overs so be it, if its batting 10 overs, 15 overs, 20 overs then that is my job so…T20 is an inconsistent game but the goal is to just get better in each and every game,” the vice-captain said.
