Lam, Narine, Nathoo winners of MMG+ sponored chess tournaments
Pooja Lam, Ricardo Narine, and Loris Nathoo emerged winners of the female, junior and senior divisions when the Guyana Chess Federation’s MMG+ sponsored Online Rapid tournaments concluded last weekend.
“The three tournaments, sponsored by Mobile Money Guyana Inc., commenced on Saturday [November 26th] with the ladies and girls then concluded on Sunday [November 27th] with the juniors (Under 20) and seniors,” a release from the federation stated.
The release added, “Players competed in seven (7) rounds of competition, each match with a time control of 15 minutes with two second increments (15mins + 2 secs), with the exception of the seniors who played matches of 10 minutes duration with two second increments (10 mins + 2 secs). The tournaments were hosted on the Tornelo.com platform, and were managed and supervised by FIDE arbiter John Lee.”
In the female Rapid section, Lam played undefeated to secure the title. Sherlyta Campayne ended as the runners-up with 5.5 points while Jessica Callender rounded out the top three with 5 points. The division also featured upcoming talents such as Faraa Gaskin, Kristin Xavier and eight year old Kataleya Sam.
Similarly, in the Junior Rapid division, Narine ended atop the pile with six points. Keron Sandiford also ended on six points but lost on the top spot after losing to Narine during their matchup. Kyle Couchman secured third place with 5.5 points.
Julian Mohabir (4 points), Adhiraj Kissoon (3 points), Javier Davenand (3 points) and Arush Ramnarine (2.5 points) also featured in the event.
Meanwhile, Nathoo defeated all his opponents to clinch the senior division. Former national champion and Fide Master, Anthony Drayton, was the runner-up with five points while Roberto Nero placed third.
The respective winners pocketed $10,000, while the corresponding runnersup received $8,000. The respective third place finishers received $7,000.
