Twenty-two records fell at powerlifting championships
-82-year-old among outstanding performers
Twenty-two, that is the number of national records that were broken on Sunday when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) staged its Masters and Intermediate Championships at St Stanislaus’ College auditorium.
Best lifter in their respective categories, Sarah Sanmoogan (female intermediate) and Wazeer Hussain (male intermediate ) broke six of the 22 records, four for Sanmoogan and remainder for Hussain while the pair of Nigel Phillips (four) and 82 year-old Arnold Archer had eight between them.
Sanmoogan, a 20-year-old from Saiyan Fitness Club, had a total of 615kg from squatting 122.5kg, benching 62.5kg and dead lifting 155kg. Her total (340kg) and lifts were all national records. For her heroics, the 69kg lifter earned the female overall Intermediate best lifter trophy.
For Hussain, his best lifts in the squat, bench press and deadlift were 197.5kg, 132.5kg and 240kg. The 83kg athlete totaled 570kg. His deadlift and total were both records.
Archer, lifting in the 74kg Masters 4 category earned the records in the squat (50kg), bench press (32.5kg), dead lift (60kg) and total (142.5kg).
The 105kg Masters 1 Phillips, recorded records in the squat (290kg), bench press (192.5kg), deadlift (232.5kg) and total (715kg).
The other records went to Keisha Abrigo (four) who was guest lifting, Richard Fredericks (four), and Marley Vyphuis (deadlift) who was declared the best lifter Masters in the classic division.
The championship, the second staged by the federation for the year, attracted in excess of 20 lifters. The next event on the GAPF calendar, the Raw Nationals Championship, is tentatively set for July 31.
