Chanderpaul, Motie centuries see Harpy Eagles to 490-7
-Pride 48-2 at close of play on second day
Tagenarine Chanderpaul struck his third first-class century while Gudakesh Motie crossed the triple-figure mark for the first time in his career as Guyana Harpy Eagles piled up 490 for seven in their first innings against Barbados Pride who closed the second day of the West Indies Championship on 48 for two.
Playing at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago, the Eagles resumed on 219 for four with Chanderpaul on 68. His responsible innings spanned over 11 hours and 434 balls as he worked his way to 140 not out by the time Eagles declared after 157.4 overs.
His third first-class century featured 14 boundaries including a cut through point off a short ball to bring up his hundred.
The left-hander added 68 for the fifth wicket with Anthony Bramble who resumed on his overnight score of 21 but was struck in the stomach and forced to retire hurt on 38 from 38 balls. Keemo Paul was then bowled by Raymon Reifer for one, but Veerasammy Permaul joined Chanderpaul to see the former champions off to lunch on 313 for five with Chanderpaul on 103 and Permaul on 34.
However, Permaul was dismissed off the first ball after lunch when he guided a catch to Shamarh Brooks in slips off of Akeem Jordan to break the 53-run sixth wicket stand.
Gudakesh Motie then entered the crease and came with an agenda as he smacked 12 fours and four sixes during his maiden first-class century.
Motie faced 118 balls for his 110, hitting a four down to long on to cross the triple-figure mark and swatting Keon Harding for a six in the same area before he got a top edge from the next delivery that sailed into the hands of Brooks at backward square. His wicket ended a seventh wicket partnership of 143 between the two. Nial Smith also capitalised on the batting pitch to hit five boundaries during his ball-a-run 28 not out. For Pride, Jordan ended with 3-108 while Reifer bagged 237.
The defending champions, Pride, were rocked early in their first innings as Akshaya Persaud pulled off a sharp low catch at short leg to dismiss ‘danger-man’ and Pride skipper, Kraigg Brathwaite, for 17 off of left-arm spinner, Permaul.
Brooks also departed for two after he was trapped leg before wicket to Paul as he failed to offer a shot on a ball that nipped back into his pads. Shayne Moseley is currently on 17 not out from 47 balls while Shai Hope is yet to get off the mark.
In the other fixture, Leewards Islands Hurricanes resumed on 308 for seven and added 49 runs before being bowled out with Jayden Seales picking up 5-49. Jeremiah Louis was left stranded on 42
An exceptional all-round performance from Kaysia Schultz ensured Demerara Women a 179-run win over Select XI yesterday at National Stadium, Providence as the Guyana Cricket Board senior female inter-county tournament continued.
Demerara won the toss and amassed 276-7 in their 50 overs after opting to bat. Select XI were routed for 97 after 26 overs.
Schultz top scored with 63 from 76 balls after striking five boundaries. Together with Heema Singh who made a 43-ball 30, the two added 83 in a fifth wicket partnership.
Earlier, the foundation was laid by Lashauna Toussaint who struck seven boundaries on her way to 60 from 78 balls before being bowled by Jamie Campbell. Meanwhile Kavita Yadram cracked five fours during her 56-ball 52. No other batter reached double figures.
Select XI gifted 46 extras, while Niveena Ramnauth and Haneesa Mohammed picked up two wickets each for 39 and 45 runs respectively.
Schultz returned with her left-arm spin to grab 3-12 from her seven overs and was supported by Shemika Edwards, Singh and Mandy Mangru who all picked up two wickets a piece.
Realeanna Grimmond played the lone hand with a top score of 35 from 67 balls, featuring seven boundaries. Grimmond shared a productive 38-run partnership with Darshanie Subramanie (03) but got little support. Extras chalked up 37 towards the target as only Kareena Singh with 11, managed double figures.

Trinidad and Tobago Red Force were rolled over for 140 in 58 overs as Louis returned to take 4-32. Colin Archibald also bagged 4-27. Joshua Da Silva top scored with a 115-ball 65, decorated by 11 boundaries.
Hurricanes are currently leading by 240 runs after closing the day on 23 without loss. Kieran Powell and Montcin Hodge are at the crease on 13 and five respectively.
In the third match of the round, Jamaica Scorpions moved from their overnight score of 118-4 to 346 in response to
Windward Islands Volcanoes first innings score of 137. Volcanoes are still trailing by 108 runs as they closed day two on 101 for three after 33.1 overs.
Scorpions’ Brandon King anchored their innings with 119 from 154 balls while getting support from Jamie Merchant (58). Preston McSween retuned 4-96 as Josh Thomas (3-56) and Sherman Lewis (2-65) supported.
Derval Green removed both Volcanoes openers, Devon Smith (34) and Kimani Melius (17) while Merchant removed Alick Athanaze for 17. Kavem Hodge is on 30 not out from 76 balls. The competition enters the penultimate day today.
