Harpy Eagles lose Super50 opener

Guyana Harpy Eagles did not get the start they would have wanted in the CG United Insurance Super50 after losing by 28 runs to Windward Islands Volcanoes yesterday.

Eagles won the toss and inserted Volcanoes who exploded to 296 for four in their full quota. Eagles could not keep up with the asking rate and eventually bowed out for 268 in 46.4 overs.

Alick Athanaze was the magma chamber of the Volcanoes’ innings with his maiden List A century. The left-handed Dominican clubbed four sixes and a dozen fours on his way to 133 from 140 balls.

The 23-year-old shared a 119-run partnershi­p for the opening wicket with seasoned campaigner, Johnson Charles who made 63. Charles struck five sixes and two fours during his 63-ball knock but eventually fell to left-arm spinner, Gudakesh Motie (257).

Athanaze then added 127 for the second wicket with Kavem Hodge who chipped in with 42 from 57 balls as his innings featured two fours and a six before coming to an edge via a sharp return catch to Eagles vice captain, Veerasammy Permaul.

Shadrack Descarte and Sunil Ambris were both unbeaten on cameos of 21 and 16 respective­ly.

In the chase, openers Tagenarine

Chanderpau­l and Anthony Bramble laid the foundation with 44 runs in six overs before Ryan John trapped Bramble leg before wicket for 18.

Chanderpau­l, who is in the West Indies Test squad bound for Australia shortly, top scored with 48 from 47 balls. His innings featured six boundaries.

Tevin Imlach made 36 while cameos came from Kevin Sinclair (33), Motie (31 not out), Sherfane Rutherford (28) and Veerasammy Permaul (28).

Descarte returned to take 3-41 while John and Kenneth Dember ended with two wickets each.
