Ministry sponsors airfare for Qatar-bound Indigenous dance group
Following their selection to perform in Qatar at the ongoing FIFA World Cup games, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports has sponsored the airfare of a local Indigenous dance group.
Speaking on Thursday at the presentation where the tickets were handed over, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Charles Ramson Jr, explained that the group was selected after stringent checks by officials from Qatar from a list of participants this country had sent.
The group, the Riverside Angels, will be hosted by the Qatari government and will perform a dance at one of the World Cup events.
Ramson believes that their performance at the games, viewed by billions globally, gives Guyana the opportunity to promote itself.
“It gives us an opportunity to show the world what Guyana has to offer and we are very proud of these young women who have had a lot of engagements with us for a number of cultural programmes already.”
Earlier this year, the Qatari government invited artistes from across the globe to showcase their talents during the FIFA World Cup, which started on November 21 and will end on December 18.
“The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) is welcoming applications from all kinds of performers – including visual arts, crafts and heritage, fashion and design, performance arts, theatre, music and film – who are interested in performing at a variety of cultural activations across Qatar during the tournament.
Successful applicants will become part of the host country entertainment offering and help to deliver an exceptional fan experience. The project aims to support the SC’s ongoing efforts to make Qatar 2022 a platform for cultural exchange while providing a vibrant array of activities,” the public notice had stated.
Supreme Committee Stakeholder Relations Director, Khaled Al Suwaid, had further explained the objective behind
the call. “We are looking for talented artists who are excited to play a role in delivering the first FIFA World Cup in our country and region. Our goal is to thrill and excite fans from across the globe while celebrating our
shared love of art and football. The performers can expect an incredible experience and the opportunity to share their talents with thousands of people from all over the world.”
“This project will add colour
and enthusiasm to our monthlong festival of football. We are looking forward
to welcoming the artists in Qatar. We are sure they will provide something for everyone to enjoy,” he added.
