Cadogan nets a brace as Guyana whip B/dos 3-0

-

Debutants Guyana, led by a double strike from Abosaide Cadogan, crushed hosts Barbados 30 in their second encounter of the Junior Pan American women’s hockey championships yesterday at the National Hockey Centre in St. Michael, Barbados.

The young Guyana squad, playing in their first Junior Pan American tournament, rebounded from a 0-12 defeat in their opening match to score a memorable win over the host nation.

Cadogan sent her team into the lead in the first minute of play when she converted a penalty stroke following an infringement by a Barbadian defender in the penalty area.

The Guyanese pushed further ahead when Georgiana Fernandes scored a field goal in the seventh minute to take a 20 lead at half time.

The Barbadian players were unable to restrict their opponents who continued to pile on the advantage and the score-line could have been much larger had Guyana converted the many penalty corner opportunities they had in the third and fourth quarters.

Cadogan was back on the scoresheet when she netted once again, this time a field goal in the 43rd minute.

Guyana will now play Chile in their final Group match tomorrow but could miss out on a semi-final place due to goal difference.

Meanwhile, Guyana men will be in action again today when they oppose Pool leaders Canada.

They were beaten 0-3 by the United States of America (USA) but bounced back to beat Barbados 1-0 on Tuesday.

The top teams in the championships will represent the Pan American region at the Under-21 World Cup to be hosted in Malaysia in December.
