Baseball League withdraws membership from GOA
The Robin Singh led Guyana Baseball League (GBL) has withdrawn its membership from the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA).
According to Singh, the GBL will look to professional sport development as opposed to amateur and stated that construction of the league’s state of the art facility is set to commence in four weeks.
Singh, who contested the GOA’s presidency last month, losing to Godfrey Munroe, also stated yesterday that the decision was taken to withdraw from the association because it does not share the same values of the GBL.
This comes in the aftermath of Singh’s body receiving a missive from the GOA dated March 28, 2023 which stated the leagues’ dereliction with regards to Article 7 of the GOA Constitution of which he was asked us to comply or seek assistance from the GOA as needed.
In his letter dated April, 14, 2023, Singh wrote the following...
“Baseball Guyana’s Executive met and discussed the contents of your missive and a report of events leading up to and on the evening of the GOA elections.
We are of the view that the treatment of Guyanese Olympian Aliann Pompey was egregious and beyond redemption. Our Executive, therefore, made a unanimous decision to withdraw from the Guyana Olympic Association as we cannot in good conscience remain a member of an organization that does not share our values.
To be pellucid, Baseball Guyana believes Ms. Pompey has every right to serve Guyana in her capacity as Guyanese (the only citizenship she has ever had as she did when competing with distinction and keeping the Golden Arrowhead flying proudly. We wish the new
Executive of the GOA all the best in their endeavors.”
When contacted for a comment, Secretary General of the GOA, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon told this daily that when the correspondence is officially sent to the association, the Executive Committee will review and reply. (Emmerson Campbell)
