Ministry cracking down on vending on Kingston sea defence reserve, foreshore

-

The Ministry of Public Works yesterday signalled a crackdown on vending on the Kingston sea defence reserve and the foreshore.

The ministry said in a statement: “Unauthorised vending activities have contributed to encumbrances, congestion, noise pollution and extreme levels of littering around the Seawall Bandstand and adjacent areas. Particular vendors have demonstrated complete disregard for members of the public by blocking the Seawall promenade and vandalising infrastructure and amenities installed by Government for public use.

“Strict enforcement measures are therefore being taken as part of Government’s initiative to enhance and organise the recreational areas along the Georgetown seawalls to achieve a safe and clean family friendly and tourism focused environment.

“For more information and guidance, kindly contact the Sea Defence Board Secretariat on telephone numbers 2278294 or 225-9868”.

The Ministry said that vending is strictly prohibited in the following sections of the Georgetown Seawalls.

1. Foreshore between the Fort Groyne and Camp Road

2. Waterfront promenade between NCERD Road and the Seawall Tarmac

3. Waterfront promenade and ramp adjacent to the Seawall Bandstand

4. Seawall Bandstand and surrounding

Seawall Road

It said that all unauthorised persons currently conducting business (vending) within the above indicated restricted areas must immediately desist from such activities and remove all structures and belongings from the reserve and foreshore.

Failure to comply with this directive will result in enforcement actions by the Sea Defence Board, the ministry said.
