Adelphi man pleads guilty to killing mother

An Adelphi Village, East Canje Berbice man yesterday pleaded guilty to manslaught­er in connection with the death of his mother when he appeared before Justice Simone Morris Ramlall at the High Court in Berbice.

Totaram Lalta, was charged with the murder of his mother, Jagranie Ramotar, 77, in 2019.

On Monday a jury was empanelled at the High Court in Berbice for the commenceme­nt of the murder trial, however, Lalta yesterday opted to plead guilty to manslaught­er when he appeared in court.

He will return on June 27 for sentencing.

Lalta, the woman’s biological son, gave a written caution statement on the 14th October, 2019 while being videorecor­ded, explaining his role in the offence, the court heard yesterday.

According to the accused in his statement, he was out the Sunday night drinking with his friend and came home on

Monday morning and found his mother in the kitchen.

He then slapped the woman multiple times and pushed her to the ground causing her to fall and hit her head.

He then noticed blood running from his mother’s nose and he went outside.

The woman was eventually transporte­d to New Amsterdam on the 14th of October 2019 and later transferre­d to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was admitted as a patient until the 6th November 2019 when she was then transferre­d back to the New Amsterdam Hospital.

On the 10th of November 2019, Ramotar was discharged and sent home but remained in an unconsciou­s state. She died on the 14th of November, 2019 at her home.

A post-mortem examinatio­n was conducted which revealed the cause of death as a chronic subdural hematoma caused by blunt trauma to the head.
