-

Team Guyana will begin their preparation for the Tobago Open, which is pencilled to be staged on March 14th at the prestigious Magdelena Grand Beach & Golf Resort.

This was confirmed by an official release from the Guyana Golf Association (GGA). According to the release, Guyana competed in last year’s edition and featured players such as GGA President Aleem Hussain, Rakesh Harry, Monnaf Arjune, Panko Ramsundar, and Curry Ganpat.

The trio of Hussain, Harry, and Arjune competed in the first flight, while Ramsundar and Ganpat competed in the other segments.

“Several other players, such as current Guyana champion Avinash Persaud, Vishal Dhanai, and Ayube Subhan, are expected to reinforce the Guyanese ranks,” the release stated.

The correspondence further stated that Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association chief Wayne Baptiste reached out to his Guyanese counterpart to extend the invitation for the four-day tournament, noting, “It is time that we see more Guyanese players taking part in these major Caribbean championships, and we are expecting a large contingent of players to this tournament and to the Republic Bank Juniors in April.”

Meanwhile, GGA President Hussain said, “While our male players didn’t perform at their best, the juniors such as Adina and Adam Arjune took home prizes in their categories. Our future lies in the hands of our young players, and with the emphasis placed by the Ministry of Education Priority Programme on sport development, we expect to see a surge in the level of participation in these events.”

The release further stated that Guyana is also scheduled to participate in tournaments in Barbados, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Suriname in 2024, while plans are afoot for the staging of the first international drive, chip, and putt tournament during the month of August at the Westside Golf Course in Vreed-en-Hoop.
