French Guiana to host 2024 Inter-Guiana Games in October
The 2024 edition of the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) is set to be staged in Cayenne, French Guiana, from October 24–26. This decision comes on the heels of days-long discussions with the relevant governmental representatives and officials from the respective countries that are involved; Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname
According to Guyana’s Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, The Guyanese contingent’s planned arrival date at the historical event will be October 22, with their departure from French Guiana slated for October 27. On the other hand, due to Suriname being closer to the host nation in terms of geographical location, their team will arrive in the French territory on October 23.
After the initial deliberations, a further meeting is planned for February 22 in Cayenne specifically to decide on the number of disciplines that will be contested as well as the logistical details.
Ninvalle, following the meeting, stated; “The expeditious nature of the event’s confirmation is a clear indication and illustration of its overall impact and importance to the region as a competitive, social, and cultural endeavor. The government of Guyana remains committed to the sustenance of this historically significant platform, as its inherent value simply cannot be denied and is a palpable reminder and reality in the future of our shared and mutual interests and values.”
Guyana to host in 2025
Ninvalle also revealed that it has been proposed that Guyana take up the responsibility of hosting the games in 2025.
“At a meeting held in Paramaribo on January 6th, it was proposed that Guyana host the 2025 edition. That is in keeping with the trend. Guyana would have hosted 2022; Suriname 2023; 2024 is going to be French Guiana; and then it comes back to Guyana in 2025. Also, discussions were held on the 2027 edition, which will mark 60 years of the IGG, and further discussions will be had about what
happens, who will host, and whether to have the hosting shared amongst the three territories. Also discussed was the possibility
of having contact sports such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and boxing included in the upcoming IGG.”
First held in 1967, the
IGG is traditionally an annual fixture among Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The previous edition was run off in
Suriname, with Guyana hosting the 2022 edition after a five-year hiatus owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
