Inaugural ‘Georgetown versus the Rest’ Street-ball set for January 23rd

The inaugural ‘Georgetown versus the Rest’ Street-ball championship will kick off on January 23rd at the Back Circle Tarmac in East Ruimveldt.

The event, which will be contested in an initial group stage, will last for nine days and feature 32 teams from various communities. The group stage will comprise six days, which are January 25th, 26th, 30th, February 1st, and 3rd. Meanwhile, the elimination round will encompass February 6th [round of 16], 8th [quarterfinal], and 10th [semifinal and final].

To date, 25 teams have confirmed their participation. They are: Back Circle A, Back Circle B, Timehri Ballers, Make it Happen, Sparta Boss, Five-0, Lodge All-Stars, Bent Street, Victoria Eagles, Sophia A, Sophia B, Team Cruel, California Square, Red Force, Stabroek Ballers, Gunners, Showstoppers, Gold is Money, Genesis, Bagotstown, Ballers Empire, North East La Penitence, LA Ballers, Agricola, Festival City, and Broad Street.

Meanwhile, Selwyn ‘National’ Williams, coordinator of the event, said, “This tournament is to build partnerships with youths from all communities through sport to foster a safer and more secure Guyana. We expect this to be a very competitive tournament.”

The winner of the event will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will walk away with $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000, respectively. On the individual side, the eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) will ride away with a motorcycle.
