Online attacks targeting Pandit Deodat Persaud raise concerns about the future of democracy in Guyana

- Dear Editor, Sincerely, Pt. Ubraj Narine, JP, COA Mayor (Former) City of Georgetown

In a democratic society, freedom of expression stands as one of the core pillars of progress and development. It allows individuals to voice their concerns, opinions, and ideas without fear of retribution or persecution. However, recent online attacks on Pandit Deodat Persaud, a devoted advocate of Guyana’s nationbuilding process, through his unwavering belief in Guyana’s potential has demonstrated a genuine passion for the betterment of his homeland. His contributions, both online and offline, have offered a fresh perspective, questioned policies, and presented alternative views - all of which are hallmarks of a healthy democracy. Yet, it is disheartening to witness the online onslaught against him merely because his views do not align with those in power. These attacks reflect a dangerous mindset that seeks to stifle debate and discourage critical thinking, all under the banner of supporting the PPP administration.

We must firmly condemn the individuals responsible for these online attacks. Their actions go against the very essence of democracy, attempting to silence a voice that counters the dominant rhetoric. In a vibrant democracy, diversity of opinion should be celebrated, allowing for an inclusive society where ideas are debated, challenged, and refined. It is equally disappointing to witness the lack of condemnation or action from the PPP leadership. Rather than vehemently denouncing these attacks, they inadvertently encourage a culture of silencing dissent by turning a blind eye. This raises questions about their dedication to democratic principles and their willingness to foster an inclusive environment where citizens can freely express their opinions.

The online attacks targeting Pandit Deodat Persaud raise concerns about the future of democracy in Guyana. If a citizen who expresses views in a civil and respectful manner becomes the target of vicious online harassment, what message does it send to the larger society? Are we to believe that only one opinion is worthy of protection while divergent thoughts should be quashed? True democracy empowers all its citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations. It welcomes open discussions, values different perspectives, and encourages citizens to question their leaders. By allowing these online attacks to persist, we are betraying the very foundation on which our democracy stands. In conclusion, I call on the Hindu community to condemn the unjust online attacks on Pandit Deodat Persaud, especially the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Guyana Pandit’s Council and Region 3 Pandit’s Sabha. Let us remember that progress can only be achieved through inclusivity, tolerance, and the willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue.
