Lady Jags local cadre departs today for LA training camp
- approximately four players make 23-member roster
Guyana Football Federation Technical Director Bryan Joseph has confirmed that the locally based contingent of the Lady Jaguars senior programme will depart local shores today for a five-day training camp in Los Angeles, California, in preparation for their CONCACAF W Gold Cup preliminary fixture against the Dominican Republic.
This was disclosed during a brief interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday. According to Joseph, the locally based contingent, which is approximately four players, will depart for Los Angeles to take part in a training camp that will feature 23 players ahead of the match against the Dominican Republic.
He explained, “The local contingent will be leaving tomorrow [today] to join up with the rest of the team for a five-day camp in Los Angeles, and then they will go straight into the tournament. Approximately four local players will travel with the team. The total squad consists of 23 players. All the players and coaches will be there for the training camp.”
Joseph was tight-lipped on the composition of the
team as well as the four locally based players that made the final roster.
However, according to a source close to the team, “the four locally based players that have secured their roster spots are from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF). They
are Jalade Trim, Sandra Johnson, and Glendie Lewis, who are from the army, and Lakeisha Pearson, who plays with the police. Surprisingly, local defender Glengie Lewis, who is the sibling of Glendie, failed to make the cut.”
The Lady Jaguars qualified
for the playoff section of the event after topping Group A in League B of the qualification tournament. Guyana ended with a record of five wins and a loss. Similarly, the Dominican Republic emerged from Group C in League B with an identical record to their impending
foe. The two nations were paired based on rankings.
A win for the Lady Jaguars will seal their appearance in the tournament and place them alongside hosts the United States, Mexico, and Conmebol outfit Argentina in Group A.
The inaugural W Gold Cup will occur from
February 20th to March 10th, 2024, in the United States. The single-leg matches will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, United States, on February 17, 2024, immediately prior to the competition. The three winners will qualify for the group stage.
