On Saturday, Minister in the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues and her staff unveiled plans for the construction of multi-purpose recreational facilities in two East Bank Demerara communities and one on the West Bank Demerara..

Under the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)-funded Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme, Herstelling Plot C will benefit from a $94m facility, while Covent Garden will similarly benefit from a $101m facility.

A release from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) said that the consultations were geared at discussing with residents the draft design for the recreational facilities to be constructed in both communities.

The sessions were facilitated by the Deputy Director of the Community Development Department, Donel BessBascom, Community Development Officer II, Carneshia Periera, Health Safety and Environmental Manager, Sunil Gopaul, Health Safety and Social Safeguard Technical Officer,

Albert Narine, and other technical project staff.

Rodrigues brought residents up to date on development in the housing and infrastructure sectors, noting that they can expect more.

Speaking directly to the IDBfunded project, the Minister told residents that she is pleased with the road works and sidewalks that have been completed. She added that as the works continue in the respective communities, residents are expected to play their role in monitoring the projects in their respective communities.

The release said that the new facilities will feature a play area, washrooms and changing rooms, a pavilion, a basketball court, an open auditorium, a footpath, a perimeter fence, and LED floodlights in and around their immediate environs.

Also, a similar session was conducted at Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara. A facility to the tune of $182m will be constructed in Onderneeming to serve that and surrounding communities, the release said.
