Eagles down Colts to lead ‘One Guyana’ Harpy Eagles conference final

- Kwakwani level Jaguars conference final series against Ravens

Eagles took a 1-0 lead in their best of three series against the Colts in the Harpy Eagles Conference final, while Kwakwani defeated Ravens to level the Jaguars Conference final at 1-1 when the ‘One Guyana’ Basketball League continued on Saturday evening.

Staged at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, the Eagles defeated the Colts 73-64. Travis Belgrave scored the most with 30 points, while the duo of Sherland Gillis and Michael Richards supported him with seven points, respective­ly. For the loser, Shelroy Thomas tallied a game-high 37 points, with Carmelo Man-SonHing contributi­ng nine points.

Trailing 19-20 at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles soared into the lead, heading into the halftime interval at 37-27 after outscoring the Colts 18-7. The Colts responded in the third interval, netting 16 points while restrictin­g the Eagles to seven points to trail 43-44 entering the final period. However, any hopes of a Colts come-from-behind win were extinguish­ed as the Eagles outscored their rivals 29-21.

Meanwhile, Kwakwani defeated the Ravens 79-57 in game two of the Jaguars Conference final to level proceeding­s at 1-1. Jamal Gilkes led the way for the victory with 18 points, while Domair Gladstone and A. Phillips assisted with 12 and 11 points, respective­ly.

On the other side, Shamar Huntley and Dominic

Vicente recorded nine points apiece, while Ryan Stephney and Darcel Harris chipped in with eight points, respective­ly. Storming to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, Kwakwani extended their advantage in the second stanza, outhustlin­g the Ravens 29-17 to lead 45-24 at the halftime interval.

Kwakwani further increased their lead in the third stanza, scoring 23 points while restrictin­g the Ravens to 17 points to enter the final period in complete control at 68-41. With the contest effectivel­y decided, Kwakwani outscored their foe 11-10 in the fourth stanza. The tournament continues on Saturday at the same venue.
