-

The police are currently investigating an accident on the #72 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice on Sunday around 6 am involving an officer attached to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU). No injury was reported.

The police said the accident involved a motor pick-up, PRR 2272 owned by the Government of Guyana and attached to the Ministry of Home Affairs, based at CANU Region #6 and driven by a CANU officer; motor car #HC 2015 and motor lorry, GJJ 7052 both owned and parked by Narine Dennis, 41-year-old of Lot 139 #72 Village and motor car, HC 3733 owned and parked by Vishnu Persaud of Lot 35 B #72 Village.

Enquiries disclosed that motor pickup, PRR 2272 was proceeding south along the drive lane at a fast rate when the driver alleged that a horse ran across the road. On seeing this, the driver applied brakes and pulled further

east to avoid a collision. Immediately after, a yellow pick-up (number unknown) that was proceeding in the same direction from behind collided with the rear of PRR 2272.

As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided first with motor car, HC 3733 which was stationary on a bridge, causing the same car to shift further south and

strike a wooden fence.

The pickup then slammed into motor car, HC 2015 that was stationary on a bridge and motor lorry, GJJ 7052 that was also stationary on the same road where it hit motor lorry, GJJ 7052 on the eastern parapet, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The area was canvassed for

CCTV cameras, and one was seen. All vehicles were examined by the Licensing and Certifying officer, a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and same read 26 & 27 micrograms respectively. A notice of intended prosecution was served on the driver who is in custody assisting the police with its investigation.

Head of CANU, James Singh, when asked yesterday about the accident, told Stabroek News that the matter is a police matter and an investigation has been launched. He said that the CANU officer was on official duties at the time of the accident.
