Berbice engineer freed of murder of partner

Berbice engineer, Neil Madramootoo, who was charged with the murder of his partner, Ashmin Mahadeo in November last year was yesterday released after the matter was discharged at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

In November, 2023, Madramootoo, 29, of Lot 13 Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam, had appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court via Zoom, where he faced the charge that on October 1, 2023 at Williamsburg, Corentyne, he murdered Mahadeo.

He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison.

However, yesterday at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Hugh discharged the matter against Madramootoo stating that the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case of murder in relation to the accused.

On the morning of October 1, 2023 Mahadeo, 30, of Lot 25 D Williamsburg, Corentyne, was shot in the back of her neck resulting in the bullet exiting in the lower area of her jaw. Since the incident, the woman had been hospitalized in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. She was transferred back to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she eventually succumbed.

Her relatives had said that doctors informed them that Mahadeo was paralyzed as a result of the injury prior to her death.

Meanwhile, according to the police and relatives the post-mortem examination was carried out by Government Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan at the Bailey Funeral Home located in Number 4 Village, West Coast Berbice.

Commander Bacchus in a statement had said that, “It must be noted that Doctor Bridgemohan didn’t give a cause of death; he reported to investigators that he have to see the deceased hospital records hence he will give the cause of death within 24 hours.”

However, he had eventually followed up and disclosed that the cause of death was septic anaemia shock, lobar pneumonia and gunshot injuries.
