John’s dominance continues with Jagan’s Memorial Road Race Stage 1 win
Guyana’s leading cyclist, Briton John of United We Stand, extended his perfect start to the season with his third victory in as many races, taking the top of the podium in the Elite/Open class of the first stage of the Jagan’s
Memorial Cycling Road Race yesterday.
The race, which began in Schoonord on the West Bank of Demerara, saw action from the get-go as John broke away with the peloton (the top six finishers included) just two miles into the race. From there on, the peloton journeyed together as a bunch to the turn-back point at Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo. On the return leg, John made his move.
At Ruby, John attacked and sprinted away from the peloton, never to be caught again, crossing the finish line at the point of origin in a time of one hour, 37 minutes, 42 seconds, in a display of dominance.
Coming behind John was Team Evolution’s Christopher ‘Chicken Legs’ Griffith, who settled for second, while Segun Hubbard, Alexander Leung, Kwame ‘Key Man’ Ridley, and Aaron Newton occupied the remaining top six spots in that order.
Alexander Leung, as is fast becoming the norm, was the best junior cyclist, followed by Alexander Newton and Nivonn Wilson, who were second and third, respectively.
Hubbard took the top spot in the Veteran’s 40+ Class, while Ridley and Roy Mangru were second and third.
Junior Niles was the top dog in the Veteran’s 50+ category, while Mark Spencer and Ian Jackson were second and third, respectively. Abigale
Jeffrey was the lone female cyclist taking part in the event.
