Slingerz crushes Fruta Conquerors in the KFC Elite League
West Demerara powerhouse and undefeated outfit Slingerz FC thrashed two-time champion Fruta Conquerors by a 4-1 scoreline when the KFC Elite League continued last evening at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Training Centre, Providence.
In what seemed to be a scoreless first half, Slingerz FC recorded two goals in as many minutes in the dying embers of the period. The Vergenoegen outfit broke the deadlock in the 45th minute, as Leo Lovell scored, cutting in from the left side before uncorking a curling rightfooted effort from outside of the penalty box that settled into the right corner.
Darren Niles doubled their advantage in the 45th+2 minute, fending off several challenges while storming into the left side of the box before slotting the ball into the lower left corner beyond the advancing goalkeeper.
The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval. Fruta Conquerors reduced the deficit to 1-2 in the 62nd minute as Dwayne Jones found the back of the net, slotting into the left corner after latching onto a lobbed left-sided cross inside the six-yard area.
However, any hopes of a come-from-behind win were quickly dashed as Jeremy Garrett restored Slingerz two-goal advantage in the 80th minute, unleashing a powerful right-footed freekick into the top left corner from just outside the centre of the penalty area.
The result was then sealed in the 86th minute as Niles completed his brace, racing onto a through pass following a one-two passing combination outside the penalty area before slotting the ball into the lower right corner.
The event continues tomorrow with a solitary fixture at the No. 5 ground in Berbice. Hosts, Monedderlust FC, will oppose the Guyana Police Force (GPF) from 19:00 hrs.
The winner of the tournament will receive $2,000,000, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will receive $1,200,000, $800,000, and $500,000, respectively.
