Body of fisherman found at Jib
A fisherman who was last seen alive on a boat moored at Jib, Essequibo Coast was found dead yesterday morning in the sea.
The police said in a report that the death of Mahindra Persaud, 23, of Lot 259 Devonshire Castle Back Street, Essequibo Coast occurred sometime between Wednesday 6th March, 2024 at about 8 pm and Thursday 7th March, 2024 at about 6 am.
The police say that according to Paishwarlall Chattergoon, 55, a boat captain, on Tuesday 5th March, at about 11 am, he, Persaud and Johnny Toro, a fisherman of Lot 80 Jib, left and went to sea to catch fish. However, the boat broke down and had to be towed by another boat which is owned by the Paishwarlall.
Paishwarlall further said that on Wednesday 6th March at about 7.30 pm he, Persaud and Toro moored both of the boats at the Jib seawall about 300 feet out in the sea and he left the now deceased and Toro and he went home.
According to Toro, he was on the boat, which had broken down while Persaud was on the other boat. At about 8 pm he left the boat he was on and went home.
Yesterday, at about 6.30 am the body of Persaud was seen floating about 100 feet out at sea by a passerby.
The police were summoned and the body was escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital.
According to his brother, Mervin Persaud, Mahindra left for sea four days ago. The brother would usually do that regularly as a way of providing for his family. Mervin said that he did not receive a call from his brother for four days but thought to himself everything was fine.
“My brother means everything to us, he usually goes to catch his fish and return, my mother is ill and we all join to take care of her since our father died”, Mervin
