Two contracts have been awarded to Faldhari Singh and Son Contracting Services for buildings in Region Two and water supply systems in Region Nine under the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)-funded BNTF.

A release from the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) said that yesterday, a contract valued at $77.7m, to construct buildings in mashabo & Mainstay under the Women and Vulnerable Groups Empowerment sub-project was signed between the Government of Guyana - via the BNTF - and Faldhari Singh & Son Contracting Services.

The release said that the BNTF received an application for the construction of a bakery in Mainstay and an Eco- Restaurant at Mashabo. The proposal, it said, originated from two vibrant women’s groups in the villages with a vision to boost their tourism product while improving livelihoods of villagers, especially women. In addition to the facilities, beneficiaries will receive training in areas such as entrepreneurship, marketing, food management and hospitality through a collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

The BNTF is a cyclical grant-funded programme by the CDB that aims to reduce the incidence of poverty by improving access to basic public services. The release said that livelihoods and entrepreneurship interventions such as these two projects, are specifically designed to generate sustainable income, directly promote asset ownership and accumulation, and enhance food security.

Meanwhile, on Thursday Water Supply System contracts for Region 9 Nappi & Surama were signed between

BNTF and the same company to the tune of $74.9M

Works to be done under these sub-projects include the construction of trestles and provision of water tanks, installation of transmission and distribution networks and installation of solar systems including security lights.

Present at the signing were Karen Roopchand, Project Manager, BNTF and other officials.
