Sixth edition of South America Undiscover­ed Martial Arts Championsh­ip set for March 31

A day full of showdowns and fierce rivalry in the martial arts arena is expected on March 31 when Korean Internatio­nal Martial Arts Guyana (KIMAG) is slated to kick off the sixth edition of their South America Undiscover­ed - Martial Arts Championsh­ip at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

Over 150 martial artists from the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and host nation Guyana will descend on the venue to compete in the categories of Individual Katas, Individual Sparring, Team Katas, Team Sparring and Freestyles.

Martial artists will compete in age categories 6-8, 9-12, up to 35 and in the open category.

The tournament was launched yesterday morning at the boardroom of the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) office on Middle Street.

At the launching, organiser and head sensei of KIMAG, Roland Eudoxie told Stabroek Sport that Guyana’s team will consist of 84 members across all age ranges.

“We have a strong team and we know that they will come out successful at the Championsh­ip come March 31. We have been training since January for this, so with our preparatio­n, half the work is already done”, he said.

Trinidad and Tobago will field 48 martial artists while Suriname has 35 competitor­s. The event is receiving support from a number of businesses such as Guyana Breweries (Smalta), Starbucks, Hand in Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Companies, Team Mohamed’s, Gupta Group, Guyana Beverages Inc,Tech Dev I.T Solutions and IBIS Constructi­on Equipment Sales and Rentals. The Guyana Tourism Authority is also providing support.

The Championsh­ip will kick off at 9 am sharp.
