Businessman dies after colliding with truck at McDoom
A 26-year-old businessman of Bel Air village, East Coast Demerara died on Sunday after he collided with a truck on the Mc Doom Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Police said they are investigating the accident which occurred at about 9.35 on Sunday night on Mc Doom Public Road, East Bank Demerara, in the vicinity of the Guyana Shore Base Inc, which resulted in the death of motorcyclist Domall Trim.
The accident involved Trim and a motor lorry #GAE 2805 owned by Guyana Shore Base Inc., and driven at the time by Nickell Higgins, 24.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry driver was proceeding east on the Rome Access Road to go further east across Mc Doom Public Road. As the lorry approached Mc Doom Public Road, the traffic rank at the junction stopped all the vehicles that were proceeding south and north on both carriageways and later gave the driver of the motor lorry directions to proceed east across Mc Doom Public Road.
The police report stated that while the lorry was crossing the eastern carriageway, a group of motorcyclists was proceeding south on the eastern drive lane of the eastern carriageway. The motorcyclists pulled to the eastern side of the road, navigating alongside the stationary vehicles and proceeded south at a fast rate, overtaking the line of traffic.
The police say that Trim’s motorcycle collided with the rear portion of the motor lorry, which caused him to fall and skid into the rear right-side wheel of the lorry.
He was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was seen and examined for multiple injuries to the body. Trim died while receiving treatment. His body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.
Trim’s sister Tekesha Trim told Stabroek New that her husband received a call and was informed about the accident. Upon arrival at the hospital the family was hopeful that Trim had suffered only minor injuries. According to her the doctors related that he was unresponsive to the treatment, and as a result he had to be sedated.
“In the process of her (the doctor) telling me about the injuries, they shouted for the crash cart for bed one and it was my brother, they tried to resuscitate him. A while passed and they called me back and told me that he has no pulse.”
She added that according to the information the police related to the family, the driver will be released from custody after 72 hours and a file will be prepared and sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Trim was described as jovial person who shared a great relationship with his family.
The driver was arrested and is in police custody assisting with investigations.
