Eight lights stolen from Bayroc/Wismar Synthetic Track

As the synthetic track and field facility at Bayroc/Wismar nears completion, the athletes of Linden are set to benefit tremendously. However, on Tuesday morning, workers on the project showed up to begin their day only to find that eight lights from the yet-to-be installed track lighting system were stolen.

According to information reaching Stabroek Sports, a source stated, “This morning it was discovered that eight of the lights for the synthetic track at Bayroc/Wismar were stolen.”.

In a plea to the general public, the workers are asking for the safe return of the lights or for people to place them somewhere visible where they can be picked up.

The lights are of a 400-watt voltage and cannot be used for anything else but the lighting system at the Synthetic Track. The source is also cautioning people against purchasing the lights as they would not work outside of the lighting system.

Efforts to contact the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., proved futile. Calls to his cell phone went unanswered up to press time.

Meanwhile, Stabroek Sport contacted the Athletics Association of Guyana’s (AAG) President, Amanda Hermonstine, who was surprised to learn of the incident.

She denounced the ignoble act, stating that the project is for the benefit of the community’s children, and pointed out that while Linden is known for producing stellar athletes, the theft of the lights amounts to self-injury. “It is like they are stealing from their children, and I urge whoever is responsible for that act to return the lights.”
