Suddie man, 72, gets eight months over gun, ammo

Essequibo Coast was on Tuesday found guilty of the offences of possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence and was jailed for eight months.

According to the police, the offences occurred on

Pit, Essequibo Coast.

On Tuesday 19th of March 2024, the case was heard at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Esther Sam. The defendant was absent but his counsel Miss De Santos was present. The police said that the defendant was found guilty on both charges and he was sentenced to eight months imprisonme­nt with a fine of $50.000 on each charge.

The sentences will run concurrent­ly.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, has requested that all firearms be taken from OP Security Service following the fatal shooting that occurred in Dazzell, Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara on Tuesday.

Benn told Stabroek News last evening that he requested the police to take into their possession all firearms from the OP Security Service.

Stephan Hope, 31, a security officer of Haslington, East Coast Demerara, and employed by OP Security Service, has been identified as the murder suspect. He remains hospitalis­ed in critical condition with a selfinflic­ted gunshot wound.

A police report on Tuesday stated that the suspect fatally shot Ashanti Liverpool, a 24-year-old security officer. The suspect once shared a common-law relationsh­ip with the deceased woman’s sister.
