Defending champion Santa Rosa, Waramuri record convincing wins
Defending champions of the Milo U-18 Schools Football Championship, Santa Rosa Secondary, got off to a flawless start with a 3-0 dismantling of East Ruimveldt Secondary, while Santa Rosa’s Region #1 counterparts, Waramuri Primary Top, inflicted a 5-1 thrashing of the Bishop’s High School.
Santa Rosa took on East Ruimveldt at the Ministry of Education Ground yesterday and dominated proceedings; however, the game went goalless for the first half as the reigning champions took time to find their stride.
Almost immediately after the halftime break, Keshawn Campbell would break the deadlock with the opening goal in the 48th minute. Darius Williams would make it 2-0 11 minutes later, while an own goal from the East Ruimveldt outfit would hand Santa Rosa a comfortable 3-0 win in the end.
At the same ground earlier, the lads from Waramuri put on a clinical display in their 5-1 romp over the Bishops’ High. From the get-go, it was an all-out offensive display, with Waramuri finding the back of the net after just two minutes.
Odell Holmes scored the first of his brace of goals to open proceedings, while Denzell Abrams added Santa Rosa’s second just a minute later.
Abrams netted his second just on the stroke of halftime to make it 3-0 in favour of Waramuri. Bishop’s High would pull one back through Micaiah DeFreitas in the 47th minute, but the game was put to bed with Abrams making it 4-1 in the 52nd minute to complete his hat-trick, while Holmes scored his second in the 56th minute. The remainder of the game produced no further goals as the Waramuri side eased off the gas, and the match ended at 5-1.
In other results, Carmel Secondary suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Leonora Secondary at the Queen’s College (QC) Ground, Thomas Lands. With their side depleted and the likes of Ian Daniels and Shem James absent, Carmel looked like a shadow of the side
that lifted the Digicel Schools Championship last August.
Leonora netted three first-half goals, with Jason Adams (sixth and 41st minutes) scoring twice while Tromane Hercules (seventh minute) had a single strike.
Carmel’s lone goal came through the boot of Marcus Layne in the 55th minute.
Meanwhile, South Ruimveldt thrashed Marian Academy 6-2 while President’s College drew 1-1 with Hope Secondary in
other games at the QC ground. Ann’s Grove Secondary signalled their intent with a 2-0 win over Charlestown. Matches will continue next weekend at the same venues as the second round of matches.
