GCB questions CWI selection criteria following Munisar, Millington, and Gajnabi snub
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has expressed its disappointment in the nonselection of the Guyanese trio of Ashmini Munisar, Plaffiana Millington, and Shabika Gajnabi for the West Indies women’s team tour of Pakistan and is questioning the criteria used for selection.
This was disclosed via a post on the entity’s official Facebook page yesterday. According to the post, the GCB contends that the trio, who were standout performers in the recently concluded CWI Blaze T20 and Super50 Cup tournaments, should have been selected.
The West Indies women’s team, which features two Guyanese, comprises: Hayley Matthews (captain), [Guyanese] Shemaine Campbelle (vice-captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, [Guyanese] Cherry Ann Fraser, Jannillea Glasgow, Chinelle Henry, Zaida James, Qiana Joseph, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams, and Kate Wilmott
The post stated, “Munisar, Millington, and Gajnabi were among the leading ladies in the recent CWI Women’s Super50 and T20 tournaments, either with bat, ball, or both, but were somehow strangely overlooked ahead of the Pakistan tour.”
“The non-inclusion of Munisar, Millington, and Gajnabi comes as a shock,
as the trio played outstanding cricket throughout. In the batting department, Guyana had 3 players in the top 5 for the Blaze T20, with Gajnabi, Campbell, and Mandy Mangru occupying spots 2, 3, and 5, respectively”, the post further contended.
Gajnabi, who is a regular with the women’s team, finished as the second overall leading run scorer in the T20 Blaze
Championship. She scored 138 runs and averaged 34. On the other hand, Campbelle rounded out the top three with an aggregate of 128 runs. She also finished with the most dismissals as a wicketkeeper, with six.
Meanwhile, Munisar finished as the leading wicket-taker with 12 scalps in the Women’s Super-50 Championship. She also recorded the event’s best bowling figures
with 5-15. Similarly, countrywoman Nya Latchman followed with 11 wickets, which also warranted possible selection, according to the post.
“The Guyanese trio statistically outplayed almost all of the other selectees for the upcoming tour, with the non-selection of three premier performers in both the T20 and Super50 now being questioned by the GCB”, the post further said.
