SANTA ROSA DE COPÁN STILL PRODUCING, A WORLD-CLASS CIGAR.

-

The Captain of the Militia of Gracias, don Juan García de la Candelaria was the visionary who made the creation of Santa Rosa de Copán possible in 1705. The history points out that at some point during his military expeditions, Don Juan discovered the area of Los Llanos or La Sabana, some lands located in a high plateau, covered by a leafy pine forest and watered by crystal clear streams. Don Juan bought the land from the Caxa Real of Guatemala and built a farm called “Santa Rosa de los Llanos”. Thanks to the fertility of the soils and a kind climate, the new landowner was dedicated to the cultivation of basic grains and tobacco. His efforts and successes soon attracted new Spanish settlers and the community quickly grew. In 1765 the cost of moving the tobacco to the city of Gracias and then taking it to the factories in Guatemala was so high, that it was decided to create The Royal Factory of Tobacco. The construction of the factory, located back then in what is now the central park of the city, marked the beginning of an upward career that led to the settlement to obtain the title of town in 1805 and of city in 1843. Santa Rosa de Copán is located in the most mountainous area of Honduras, so its picturesque surroundings are among hills loaded with pine forests. The tastings of premium coffee (exportation coffee) have become an icon of the city and now thanks to their success are replicated throughout the country. Its afternoons with coffee aroma have always been a success. On August 30, 2013, the city was declared the Capital of good coffee, and in it´s territory you can find more than 55 coffeeshops that offer honduran specialty coffee.
