The formerly known as “Laguna de los Lagartos” ( lake of crocodiles), today El Yojoa Lake, is the only lake of volcanic origin in Honduras and is cataloged as the largest reserve of fresh water available in the country. In 2005 it was recognized as Wetland of global interest by the UN, through the RAMSAR Convention. It is 16 km long and 28 meters deep. The Yojoa Lake sub-basin has an area of 43,600 hectares between the departments of Santa Bárbara, Cortés and Comayagua. It includes the lake and its surroundings, with 13 different types of wetlands, some unique ecosystems and the largest limestone mountain in Central America. Approximately 800 species of plants grow around it, which is equivalent to 10% of the national flora. There are also 55% of the bird species that Honduras owns, approximately 407. 54 species of mammals and 72 species of reptiles have been identified, rep- resenting 23 and 43%, respectively, of the national mammals and invertebrates. The sub-basin of the lake is one of the areas where it rains the most, due in large part to the rain forests that grow in its perimeter. It is popularly known as “El Lago” and in recent years it has become a national and international tourist niche with various attractions that invite you to enjoy its nature where its main activities are kayaking, bird watching, hiking, boating by the lake, eat fried fish, visit the falls, taste a craft beer and visit the first domes hotel in the country, among many more.
