Tela, Atlántida, is a coastal city of Honduras, it was founded by the Spanish Conquistador Cristobal de Olid on May 3, 1524 with the name of “Triunfo de la Cruz” for coinciding in date with the celebration of the day of the cross by the catholic parishioners . At first this name was very well accepted by its inhabitants, however after a certain time it was felt that it was very long and they began to abbreviate it, first they used the name “T de la Cruz” and by 1829 only “Tela” was used. Some Honduran historians consider that Tela’s name comes from the indigenous word “Tetela,” which could be translated as “abundance of hills.” The city of Tela Atlántida is crossed by the Lancetilla River, and it divides it into Tela Vieja( old Tela) and Tela Nueva (new Tela). The side known as “Tela Vieja” is the first part of the city to be inhabited, its architecture is very typical of banana times, with woods houses and“tela Nueva” is the part of the city where modern architecture is predominant. Because of its incredible nature, breathtaking beaches, unmatched culture and- coral reefs, Tela currently is a fascinating place to visit. Tela also has several national protected parks tanks to its ecosystem. The growing tourism has also led to the construction of beautiful hotel complexes for every taste and budget. Furthermore, it has an enormous wealth, represented in the Garífuna people, Intangible Human Patrimony living in communities such as Tornabé, Miami, San Juan y Triunfo de la Cruz. In February and March the celebrations and fairs in honor to the Candelaria Virgin and Saint Joseph are important events.
