La historia de Trujillo inicia a nivel internacional a partir de uno de los acontecimientos más grandes de la historia, el descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo. Trujillo se ubica en el Caribe hondureño sobre una pequeña colina desde donde se puede apreciar la belleza de su Bahía. Esta hermosa ciudad se encuentra rodeada por el Parque Nacional Capiro y Calentura. Trujillo está llena de primeras veces, fue el primer sitio de tierra firme de América donde llegó Cristóbal Colón, fue la primer capital de Honduras y fue el sitio donde se celebró la primera misa de todo el país. Fundada en 1525 por Juan de Medina y la llamó Trujillo en honor a la ciudad española del mismo nombre de la cual provenía su superior, Francisco de las Casas. Obtuvo la categoría de ciudad hasta 1532. En la actualidad Trujillo es uno de los centros turísticos más importantes del país, ya que posee una vasta historia que cada visitante desea conocer. Al no estar en las rutas tradicionales de turismo, quienes más la visitan son aventureros que al llegar se encuentran con gratas sorpresas como la Laguna de Guaimoreto, el parque nacional Capiro y Calentura o las playas de Campamento y Santa Fe, así como la historia que la caracterizan. Trujillo también se caracteriza por su inolvidable época bananera, bonanza tras bonanza, la ciudad vivió años de gran esplendor. Se intensificó y se instalaron consulados de otros países por el gran capital económico que se desarrollaba en la zona. El turismo religioso también es común en esta ciudad, pues frente al parque en el centro de Trujillo se encuentra la iglesia católica que también guarda años de historia sobre la fundación de este lugar.
