Es unodelos museos másrepresentativos de Honduras, ya que está dedicado a la adquisición, investigación, conservación y divulgación de material histórico de las personas que han poblado el territorio hondureño. El Mincomocomúnmentese le llama, fue inaugurado en el año 2006y desde ese entonces se ha consagrado como unespacio histórico y cultural del país. Es unmuseosinfines de lucro que está al servicio de la población hondureña. El recorrido del museosehadividido en tres grandes áreas temáticas: 1. Latierra hondureña 2. Laformación histórica de una nación 3. Honduras eres Tú. Estas áreas temáticas están distribuidas en cuatro salas de exhibición y unauditorio donde se presenta una versión virtual de la ciudad mayadecopán.
