the TROPICAL PUERTO CORTÉS IS OFTEN KNOWN AS “CORTÉS” OR SIMPLY “EL PUERTO”.

-

Puerto Cortés is the largest port in Honduras. It is located in the North of the country and it is only 55 km from San Pedro Sula. Puerto Cortés was founded in 1524 by Captain Gil González Dávila, under the name of Villa de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora, in the area that is now known as Cienaguita. In 1526 Hernán Cortes arrived by sea to punish Captain Gil González Dávila. Because of a storm, he was about to shipwreck and lost 17 horses, and that is why he named the place Puerto Caballos. Its current name was acquired in March 5, 1869, when General José María Medina was president. Its creation as a municipality dates back to April 3, 1882. This city has a lot to offer, apart from the beautiful beach and exquisite cuisine, in Puerto Cortés you can visit the Alvarado Lagoon with amazing vegetation, hot springs and other places that will impress you. Omoa is a small and cheerful town in the Northern part of the country.

Just 20 minutes away from Puerto Cortés, Omoa is an attractive resort in a wide curved bay offering beautiful sunsets. Omoa was a strategically important in defending the Spanish colonies against British pirates, and experienced numerous attacks by privateers. This is why here you will find the famous San Fernando de Omoa Fortress. This triangular fort was originally intended to protect Puerto Barrios in Guatemala. The fort´s construction began in 1759 but was never completed due to a combination of inefficiency and labor shortages. Today you can find a small museum that tells the story of the fort and displays a selection of military objects including cannons and vintage weaponry.
