Pomellato’s unconventional and colourful jewellery continues to inspire generations of independent women

-

There’s a story behind every piece of jewellery, and the one behind the house of Pomellato is best told through its colourful and unconventional designs.

The Italian fine-jewellery brand was created in

1967 in Milan – long an epicentre of art and fashion – by Pino Rabolini, a goldsmith’s son who also frequented the near-legendary Jamaica bar in the Brera district, a haunt of artists, philosophers and other creative talents.

It was there that Rabolini decided to introduce the concept of prêt-à-porter into the conservative world of fine jewellery, an idea that became the basis of his new brand, Pomellato. Some 25 years later, he also pioneered another innovation by using an array of candy-coloured gemstones and unconventional cuts, which would come to represent strong and independent women.

Pomellato’s best-selling Nudo collection, which celebrates the natural beauty of coloured gemstones and their irregularities, is a perfect example of this. Worn alone or stacked, the simple yet statement designs are easily mixed and matched for everyday wear.

In contrast, the Capri collection – with its floral and fruity motifs – is unmistakably feminine and fun, while the sophisticated Sabbia line of jewellery captures light subtly with a scattering of diamonds. Meanwhile, the aptly named Iconica collection recalls Pomellato’s heritage in goldsmithery by reviving the clean band designs of the 1970s in the form of rings, bracelets and pendants.

In 2017, the brand celebrated its 50th anniversary by introducing Ritratto, a collection celebrating nonconformism, creativity, craftsmanship and colour. With Ritratto, by using rare hardstones in favour of precious stones, Pomellato again affirmed its place as a pioneer in fine jewellery.

Each piece of jewellery is made on site at its Milan headquarters, Casa Pomellato, where 100 goldsmiths and artisans create the pieces by hand to guarantee quality and craftsmanship. This creative atelier enables the transformation of new and often daring ideas into reality throughout the year.

Born in a revolutionary era for women, Pomellato continues to inspire and represent independent females today – diverse women who have the power to make their own decisions, including their choice of jewellery.

Today the brand, which remains proudly Milanese, is led by its first female CEO, Sabina Belli. Of her mission to empower other women through Pomellato’s underlying philosophy of strength, style and sophistication, she says: “Women have a unique strength. They’re welcoming, inclusive and open to life – they own these qualities with or without jewels.”
