You can’t make a wrong turn when exploring New Zealand’s South Island. The best way to experience it is in a campervan – driving two to three hours a day is enough time to enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor activities, which can include cycling, hiking and kayaking.

Before you go, download the Motorhome Republic app for the best campervan sites and insider information. Driving through New Zealand can be tricky, so always allow yourself extra time to get to your destination.

Another way to admire the scenery is from above. A breathtaking helicopter flight will drop you at the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers on the west side of the South Island. And if you’re braver than me, visit Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world, for a bungee jump.

THE ADVENTURER

As an avid motorcyclist, I’m spoilt with endless road trip options on the North Island. From Auckland, a day’s ride around the Coromandel Peninsula, to the east, offers stunning scenery, seafood and empty beaches. Cathedral Cove and nearby Hot Water Beach are two spots I love. At the latter, just dig into the sand to create your own geothermal footbath.

Further south on the North Island, you have beautiful country back roads. Follow the Waikato river trails through lush farmland before reaching Lake Taupo – perfect for trout fishing. Elsewhere, go hiking around the volcanic cones of Tongariro National Park or go skiing in winter.

Allow a few days to explore Hawkes Bay, which has superb wines, artisan foods and Napier – the art deco capital of New Zealand.

Known as the City of Sails, Auckland is the gateway to New Zealand and a visit to this modern city isn’t complete without some time on the water. From Waitemata Harbour you can easily explore the outlying islands for a day trip or even overnight trips.

Waiheke Island is a popular option, and tends to lure foodies and wine buffs to its many vineyards, views, cafes and bars, all tucked away in numerous little bays.

Alternatively, if time allows, head further north from Auckland to the beautiful Bay of Islands (home to around 140 islands, undeveloped beaches and a few locals on horseback) and beyond. Simple rule: the further north you travel, the more beautiful and remote the beaches become.
