Mark is editorial director of Discovery and a past Aito Travel Writer of the Year. He explored Mongolia’s wide-open vistas on page 34. What’s your favourite empire? ‘No empires are great. But as a model of tolerance and enlightenment, the Arabic rule of southern Spain (Al-Andalus) is hard to beat.’

David is a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and the author and editor of 10 books. He explored Los Angeles by train on page 40. What’s your favourite empire? ‘ The New York Yankees, a baseball team that has been called the evil empire by its chief rival, the Boston Red Sox, for its unprecedented number of baseball championships.’ David於2015年獲古根漢獎學金,也是十本書的作者與編輯。他於40頁記敘乘鐵路暢遊洛杉磯的經過。哪個是你最喜歡的帝國?「紐約洋基棒球隊,由於多次贏得冠軍創下紀錄,主要對手波士頓紅襪隊將之稱為邪惡帝國。」
YURI HASEGAWA
Yuri is an LA-based photographer who shot the city’s railway on page 40. What’s your favourite empire? ‘I was fascinated by the Roman empire in high school – they have a very colourful history.’

JULIAN BAGGINI
Julian, founding editor of The Philosophers’ Magazine, is Discovery’s resident Western philosopher. He debates the future on page 30. What’s your favourite empire? ‘ Empire magazine, circa 1989. My tastes eventually departed from its core Hollywood content but it was a passionate youthful romance while it lasted.’

LUKE CASEY
Luke is a photographer and filmmaker based in Hong Kong who shot Chungking Mansions (page 28). What’s your favourite empire? ‘My Italian grandfather ran a cafe in Wales called the Empire and that’s where he met my grandmother. I still have the original Empire sign hanging on my wall at home.’
