A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

TV’S FIRST CHEF CONQUERS THE HEARTS OF A NATION, ONE DISH AT A TIME BY CHARLOTTE AMES-ETTRIDGE

-

JULIA, HBO Max’s feel-good foodie comedy, promises to leave you feeling warm, cosy and a little bit peckish. This two-season series recounts the story of Julia Child, a pioneer of the cooking show in the US during television’s heyday.

It’s a genre we can’t seem to get enough of today but, as Julia reminds viewers, in the early 1960s cooking shows were largely unheard of. Throughout season one, Child must summon every ounce of her tenacity and charm to win over narrow-minded TV execs and get her programme, The French Chef, on air.

The character is brought vividly and endearingly to life by Sarah Lancashire, who masters Child’s signature warbly voice, eccentric appearance and joyful personality. She is joined by a terrific supporting cast, which includes David Hyde Pierce as Julia’s loving husband Paul and Isabella Rossellini as her friend and cooking partner Simca.

With the first season ending in triumph for Child, season two brings with it the weight of expectation. Now a household name, Julia must continue to deliver for the producers and editors who are all depending on her for cookbook sales and TV ratings. As it is, she would much rather be in France with Paul, soaking up the sun and gathering inspiration for new recipes.

Speaking of which, Julia is filled with shots of mouthwatering delicacies, from soufflés to pies to petit fours. Julia is all of us as she swoons over farm-fresh ingredients and beautifully plated dishes in France. But whether you come for the food and stay for the story or vice versa, you’ll find plenty to love about this enchanting series.
