Criticizes fans for booing him and his England teammates after a 0-0 draw with Algeria in the second group match at the World Cup. England is eliminated after losing 4-1 to Germany in the last 16, with Rooney scoreless through the tournament.

2011

Sent off in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro for a foul on Miodrag Dzudovic and is banned for two matches at the finals.

2012

After missing games against France (1-1) and Sweden (3-2 win for England) at Euro 2012, scores the only goal of the game against Ukraine to enable England to progress to the quarterfin­als. Roy Hodgson’s side, however, is knocked out after losing a penalty shootout to Italy, despite Rooney netting his spot-kick.

In September, captains England in a competitiv­e match for the first time, scoring twice in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against San Marino.

2013

Scores against Brazil twice, the first a 2-1 win at Wembley and the second in a 2-2 draw in Rio de Janeiro.

2014

Scores his first and only goal at a World Cup against Uruguay but England is knocked out after finishing last in its group.

Following Steven Gerrard’s internatio­nal retirement after the World Cup, Rooney named full-time England captain by Hodgson. Wins his 100th England cap in November and scores a penalty as England beats Slovenia in a Euro 2016 qualifier.

2015

Breaks Bobby Charlton’s England scoring record in September with his 50th goal in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerlan­d.

2016

Scores the only goal as England loses 2-1 to Iceland in a major last-16 upset at Euro 2016.

Earns his 116th cap in September to make him England’s most-capped outfield player, surpassing David Beckham. Plays three more times with a game against Scotland in November, turning out to be his last in his country’s colors.
