Another race, another junior record for Wang

-

China’s Wang Jianjiahe underlined her status as an emerging star when the 15-year-old eclipsed her own world junior record by winning Saturday’s 800m freestyle in 8:12.30 on the second day of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup at the Water Cube in Beijing.

Teammate Hou Yawen took the silver in 8:15.04.

Wang set the previous mark of 8:15.35 last month in Doha.

“I like swimming at home more than competing in other countries,” said Wang, who set a world junior record in the 400m freestyle on Friday.

“I felt excited here in Beijing, though I did not train much in the last month. Since it is my first year to compete in the World Cup, I learned a lot from others.

“I take Katie Ledecky as my idol and I watched her competition on TV and the internet. I really want to be a champion like her in the future.”

Ji Xinjie and Qiu Zi’ao further excited the home crowd when they finished 1-2 in the men’s 400m freestyle final, clocking 3:39.20 and 3:41.05.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Morozov of Russia, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, Chad Le Clos of South Africa continued their winning streaks.

Morozov took the gold medal in the 100m individual medley in 50.36 seconds, 0.06 seconds shy of the world record. Michael Andrew of the US was second with a world junior record of 51.86.

Morozov also sprinted to victory in the 50m freestyle in 20.83, beating Shinri Shioura of Japan (21.27) and Andrii Govorov of Ukraine (21.3).

“My goal is to break the world record in the 100m IM. I got very close to that here, so I was happy with my performance,” said Morozov.

“I will compete in the 100m freestyle in the Tokyo and try to break the world record. I will swim the 100m IM in Singapore. That is my last chance to try to break that record before the European championships.”

World Cup leader Sjostrom swept 100m freestyle (51.25) and 100m butterfly (55.60), while Le Clos won the men’s 50m butterfly (22.22).
