South China’s Liby Group goes green to keep healthy homes clean

- By YUAN SHENGGAO

Liby Group, the largest manufacturer of domestic cleaning products in South China, was listed as a “green factory” and “green design product” supplier by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in October.

Thirty eight of the Guangzhou-based company’s household detergents now rank among a total of 58 other products recognized as being environmentally friendly by the ministry.

The achievement is representative of Liby’s support for the development of a greener economy, according to a company spokesman.

Chinese consumers want cleaner water and air, as well as healthier food — which are all key factors in boosting growth in the green economy, according to Liby.

China’s green development includes eco-friendly production, as well as laws and regulations. It also includes tax and financial incentives to encourage greener manufacturers and consumers, the company said.

This is where domestic cleaning products can make a difference, as they are used in daily lives, the spokesman added.

Domestic cleaning products manufacturers need to ensure they use green raw materials in order to produce green products so that they can satisfy and live up to modern-day consumer trends, according to Liby.

Founded in 1994, Liby has long regarded green and environmentally-friendly development as one of its core concepts. In 2016, the company published its Green Health Strategy and opened its Green Life Institute as a main driver of its research and development.

Liby seeks to build a whole Chen Kaixuan, president of Liby green industrial chain, ranging from green raw materials and formula, to green technology and production, and lead the trend of green consumption through its products.

Satisfying consumer needs has encouraged Liby to upgrade its production and technology.

Initially, environmentallyfriendly products were more costly to produce and not as popular with price sensitive consumers.

However, Liby’s consistent efforts and promotion have made a difference, together with the other famous brands, in popularizing these green products.

Liby regards promoting environmentally friendly products as a part of its corporate social responsibility.

“The company is dedicated to becoming a protector of the earth, and loves the country and the people. It aims to give customers a healthy home,” said Chen Kaixuan, president of Liby.

Today, Liby is upholding the concepts of green production and healthy lifestyles, drawing upon its R&D strength to produce a whole-series environmentally friendly washing products.

In recent years, Liby has launched laundry detergents free of fluorescent brighteners, washing powders that do not hurt the skin and antibacterial agents for food products — all of which feature health, safety and green as their selling points.

These products are popular among consumers, and are recognized as models for green daily chemical products.

Liby’s experience in pursuing green development has not only helped to foster people’s green consumption habits, but also reflects the potential of the domestic chemical industry upgrading in the direction of becoming more environmentally friendly, based on strong R&D.

According to global management consultants McKinsey & Company, the number of the middle-class consumers in China will reach 630 million in 2022, bringing about new development opportunities to the daily chemicals industry.

Liby’s achievements in green daily chemical products over the past 20 years have won recognition in the industry and market.

Liby won the 2016 International Carbon-Value Award — Innovative Value Award for its corporate social responsibility and implementing low-carbon concepts.

The company is among the first batch of enterprises that have won the approval of the authorities to set up the Chinese Light Industry Green Detergents Key Laboratory, which possesses 36 patents for inventions on environmental protection.

Some of its highlights include the washing powder concentration technology that helps to save water and electricity, which has won the National Award for Outstanding Patents.

Liby is also the winner of awards for progress in science and technology by the China

Light Industry Council, as well as government departments in the city of Guangzhou and Guangdong province.

About 70 percent of the raw materials in the formula Liby uses in its detergents come from renewable resources. The overall biodegradability of the raw materials used in the detergents exceeds 90 percent.

This year, Liby has attached great significance to researching about the natural self-cleaning ability of plants and transplanting that knowledge into its detergents to make them more environmentally friendly.

It is the wish of Liby that its efforts in pursuing green development throughout the whole industrial chain can prompt the upgrading of the detergent industry in China, said the company spokesman.

That Liby can help create a green and healthy home is not only its promise to consumers, but more importantly a reflection of the enterprise’s sense of responsibility to the country and its people, the spokesman added.
