What they say

Since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed in 2013, the number of international students at my school has skyrocketed to over 300, originating from 45 countries. We are planning to recruit more this year. Furthermore, the concept of the community of shared future, showing great foresight, will definitely gear up China’s development as well as that of nations around the world. It will promote the realization of mankind’s common goals, thus realizing a harmonious society and world.

Yu Muhong, professor and dean of the School of International Studies at Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics

Before coming here, I didn’t realize China today is so modern. Hangzhou is a very beautiful, modern and peaceful metropolis, and life here is not as stressful as in Shanghai. Here we use mobile phones to pay for everything, which is impossible in Europe. It’s so fast and convenient. Cooperation between different countries is becoming very important, especially now. We have to speak about different problems, it is only through talking and dialogue that we can find a common way that helps and benefits everyone.

Zdenek Balas, student at Zhejiang University from Switzerland

This is my third time to Hangzhou and always I see progress being made. My first trip to China was in 1983, and I can still remember at that time people were eager to learn, but they had no way of learning. I think the concept of the new era is a fantastic one. It takes a bold vision to make it happen and work.

Herbert Lee, English instructor at the University of Saint Joseph in Macao

The concept of a community of shared future for mankind put forward by President Xi Jinping was a terrific idea. The mission of the institution I work with is to bring financial and human capital that enables worldclass science to go to market and thrive. In Oxford, the scientists we work with are from all over the world and therefore we understand the importance of an international community. All the companies we work for are generating new ideas for the benefit of all humanity. That’s why one day we need to communicate the idea of an international community of shared future to lots of other people. William Goodlad, principal of Oxford Sciences Innovation

I was most impressed by the talk from Lu Li’an today when she mentioned her dream for children to have a world of compassion. It seems to me that care and compassion for people all over the world is really important and is closely related to what I teach students. We make business and, more importantly, we make friends. Money is not the only thing that matters. People matter more with feelings and connections. Sometimes if you don’t know the right etiquette, you can break a very good contract. For this reason and many others, people from all countries and regions are encouraged to learn more about each other. Maria Gutierrez, professor of tourism business at Zhejiang International Studies University
